I was driving last Wednesday morning with my husband relaxing, and listening to some music when a rap song started playing, my first instinct was to change the channel. The first lyrics were “When I was in the third grade I thought that I was gay, ‘Cause I could draw, my uncle was, and I kept my room straight. I told my mom, tears rushing down my face”
Instantly I stopped and looked at the little display screen to get the name of the song as I knew I wanted to hear it again – the song title is “Same Love” the singers Macklemore & Ryan Lewis went on talking about stereotypes, how still some people think that being gay is a decision can be cured by therapy or religion and so on.
Never heard it before though it looks like it was out late 2012. The song touched me deeply, as it put in words how I feel about accepting everyone no matter how different they are – we are all human beings that have the same emotions, needs, wants and fears.
People still judge and label others based on their color, religion, language or accent, age, gender, disability, sexual orientation and sometimes, as silly as this sounds, based on the smell of the food they eat.
Where do human being find that hatred and despise, love is a default emotion, to hate and discriminate requires an actual effort that consumes energy and wastes time.
More and more people are coming out shattering many stereotypes about gays, “Kristin Beck” formerly known as “Chris Beck” is a retired soldier that served her country and put her life in danger so we can enjoy the freedoms we have – she wasn’t a regular soldier but he was member of the most elite special operations unit in the world — SEAL Team 6. She deployed 13 times. She earned a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. She served in the same unit that killed Osama bin Laden.
This totally shatters the myth that women and transgender men and women can’t serve their country and can’t have a full career in the military?
The second myth (If you are gay you can’t be a good athlete) shattered for the first time in American sports history by NBA center and current free agent “Jason Collins” made the announcement in a feature story for Sports Illustrated. Collins is the first openly gay athlete playing in a major American team sport. Followed by former college football star “Kevin Grayson”: “Just because you’re gay doesn’t mean you can’t be the athlete you want to be. Doesn’t mean you can’t be a star. doesn’t mean you can’t go out there and go just as hard as anybody else, if not harder,” Grayson said in an interview
How can sexuality affect the way someone plays sports? If others are distracted by their sexuality then it falls on them they need to think why don’t I feel comfortable around gays, why am I homophobic? It falls on them.
My point is why some still find it difficult to accept others that are different, I just read this: Graves of Catholic woman and her Protestant husband, who were not allowed to be buried together due to the difference in their faith.
Isn’t time that we just accept the ones that are different, to get past the labels, to own who we are and respect who are not? Our diversity might and can unite us.
Isn’t it time to let our differences make a difference in the world? Let us stand out against prejudice and discrimination that already called so many young lives that didn’t need to die. Last time I checked we are in the 21st century and not the 1st century
